Stacking the Poker Chips the Right Way

In poker, as in most card games, there is a right and a wrong way to stack you chips. As a general rule of thumb, you should make sure that all of your chips are visible by everyone at the table. This includes the dealer as well as the other players. They need to know how much money you have left in order to plan out their play for the game. In the same way you can base your strategy off of the amount of the chips that are left in front of your opponent.

If you are playing in a brick and mortar online casino there are additional rules about how you should stack your chips. The highest valued chips should be placed in front of the lower valued chips so that your total bankroll can be easily assessed. Placing high valued chips behind low valued chips so that they are not visible is often construed as attempting to cheat the casino. It also needs to be said that all of your chips must be on the table at all times, removing them from the table to put them in another location is also considered cheating.

Stacking your poker chips incorrectly in a casual poker game among friends will not incur the same kind of consequences that you will receive if you violate the casino’s rules. However, you should play casual games to the same high standards as casino play. This means you shouldn’t hide your chips unless you want your friends to think that you have bad poker etiquette.
