Ignoring the Aspect of Staff Wellbeing can Cost an Organization Dearly
Wellbeing is one of the eight parameters that Best Companies, an organization that works out a list of the Best Companies to Work For published by The Sunday Times, uses to rate the workplace environment of a company.
Over 30% of the workforce of the organizations that took part in the Best Companies research revealed that they were doing overtime for up to10 hours every week. Another 50% admitted to doing some sort of overtime. Employees showing signs of stress related problems were the ones who had been working for more than 10 hours of overtime on a weekly basis, revealed the Best Companies research data.
Jonathan Austin, Founder and CEO of Best Companies said the companies who did not consider the issue of employees’ wellbeing as central to the organizations health paid huge prices for their ignorance. He also revealed the companies making it to the top of the list had inbuilt policies toward keeping their staff healthy. Organizations that did well were those who had ingrained this philosophy of ‘employees’ wellbeing equals company’s wellbeing’ deep in their core value. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) courses provide a firm foundation in all areas of personnel, ideal for anyone managing people, it will help in training to implement a sound stress management system in the workplace.
The data from Best Companies research also brought out the revelation about employee fatigue. The data suggested that 50% of the employees felt tired after a normal day’s work and when overtime was considered the number shot up to 80%. A research, separate from Best Companies’, conducted by RSA Insurance, tried to put the stress suffered by employees in terms of losses to the companies and the results were quite alarming, showing a loss of £673 million per year to companies in the UK.
Jonathan Austin further added that the organizations that were taking care of their employees and ensuring their well being were the ones performing much better than the others.
